Some good points are raised here, but, I feel like the author glosses over the significance to developing soft-skills and interpersonal relationships in terms of career growth. The growing connection between the employee and manager might not directly lead to a raise but it's a strong investment in opening future doors through that network.
lordCarbonFiber, that's a really good insight. My main point is that the most intense development of those soft skills happens when learning how to work with new people. After a couple years, if you haven't learned how to work with your colleagues, you probably never will.
