Ask HN: Weird legal situation involing me and SSA Hello HN, I am having a weird situation and could use some ideas on how to get past it. It started in December of last year, my dad passed and had a funeral and all the usual stuff. Some time in March, the SSA received his death certificate and somehow found my information associated with him and marked me as deceased. I found out in late March when my employer did an audit with the SSA and it came back that i had passed. I went to my local SSA office the last week of March and they fixed it and gave me a letter to send to places to clear it up. I sent the letter to the companies i thought mattered, life insurance, bank, credit reporting companies, retirement, those kinds of places. Because of this, i ended up losing my ID to access my work systems for roughly 2 weeks, and had to fax paperwork to a number of DoD organizations to get that reversed. Some time in early July, it reared its head again. I lost my clearance at work, the system now shows me as deceased, my credit cards are getting terminated due to me being deceased, and i could lost my job because i can't perform my normal required functions. This also affected the DMV and my passport which restricts my ability to travel for work. I also learned that my personal information (full name, address, SSN, DOB) was put into the Master Death File by the SSA when they made the initial mistake. My question to you is what options do I have here? I have been told the US Government is protected from lawsuits involving negligence and i feel like it started at the SSA office. I have talked to quite a few lawyers and they all say that they don't handle these types of cases and that the lawyers that do are way out of my price range. I am having trouble finding out what my options are other than just letting it go and dealing with the out-of-pocket losses. It has been a few months and it seems like it is just getting worse. Thank you for anything you can offer. |
