In my experience, that is not remotely typical. I've yet to encounter a single person like that.
That said, I have met people who get that worked up about: DeWalt Tools, John Deere tractors, Home Brewing, BMW cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles.
But I never had cause to assume those people were typical representations of a fanbase.
But most of my co-workers do. When the new ones come out, yes, I have to hear about the new features, most of which are already on my phone or other smart phones.
But other than those 2 weeks every year, I generally don't hear about the phones at all.
On the other hand, I hear a lot more people expounding the virtues of their Android phones. Especially on the web. I love my phone, but I don't feel the need to tell everyone about it. (Except when I first buy it... Just like all other toys.)
