Why can't developers spot the obvious vaporware ethereum (the world computing project with bitcoin technology of individual validation)?

Every naive developer I meet thinks this is a legitimate project. Why as a profession do we accept projects with spurious claims? Is Software Engineering a profession or does it move too fast for anyone to know what is going on? Is cryptocurrency and token sales a corrupting influence on this profession?
