Given the enormous cost of the Olympic games, it's really pathetic that gold medals are just gold plated.

The Olympic organizers are trigger happy/lightning quick to blame athletes for cheating but think nothing about cheating themselves on the cost of the medals. OK, the medals would cost considerably more if solid gold but their total cost would pale in comparison to the overall cost of the games.

That really does leave a bad taste.
