As an Apple shareholder, I would protest and Jobs would too. Re-read his 2005 Stanford commencement address. He's pretty in tune with life and death.

That said, it's a down day in the market and Apple stock is barely down 1 percent. At some point, everyone must step aside and let the younger generation take over. For Jobs, it appears that time has come. It's bittersweet, but it's also inevitable and no amount of money can change that.

Nine women can't have a baby in one month, and dumping eleventy billion dollars into cancer research wouldn't produce results in the timeframe that I'm sadly guessing Jobs has left.

The investor enthusiasm alone would probably rescue this country from the brink of another recession.
