Yeah, inflation adjustment doesn't really capture all the price changes. Healthcare and home ownership costs have gone up a lot more than inflation would suggest. For example In 1989 $80k would get you a pretty nice house in N. California, so this represents a lot more purchasing power than the "equivalent" $185k today, and significant disposable income would have been left over.
