For example, in the standard GoL, when one "mass" collides with another, it usually explodes in activity. None of the hexagonal ones did. If anything they just went stagnant right away.
With hexagons, you can add more refined rules that might expand on the results. Not just how many neighbours, but including thresholds for how many cells are connected in each form. In some simulations this could be called "feeding" and "satiation" for example.
