Author here: after a long process to achieve the low downtime, I am quite keen to test the blue/green deployment RDS feature AWS released last month (currently only available to RDS MySQL). It will certainly make it way easier to upgrade, and certainly developers will be quite happy if they don't need to "hack-upgrade" or accept the downtime :)
