Just so you appreciate how weird this is, my understanding is that Sergei Shoigu is possibly the least hawkish major figure in the Kremlin. I got the impression leading up to the invasion that Shoigu was the one who most wanted to continue diplomatic efforts.

Probably because a real war would expose the sheer amount of graft and theft him and his cronies had accomplished over the years. Peace would have ensured that no one even knows that the munitions depots are empty and the equipment never maintained.

Now you raise that perspective, I'm reminded that Shoigu rose to his current high position because of his success in cracking down on corruption in government departments. I read he made a lot of enemies.
