As with everything else, Hacker News is diverse enough that you can find SV millionaire die-hard Randian capitalists to card carrying communists and everything in between.

It really depends on who shows up in a thread first. Since this forum is designed to be highly biased towards downvotes and flags, and the initial comments will tend to set the mood for an entire thread, it's very easy for a few people with common interests or ideologies to steer a thread into the trash-heap.
