Impression after skimming article - sounds like a few "really old Cambridge kids" - aged 73 & up, and with some badly-dated worldviews - were quite clumsily conspiring to (try to) influence UK government policy.

Hopefully the victim's mental facilities were in better shape back when he was chief of MI6 (1999-2004)...but given the el-crapo intel on Iraqi WMD's that he was signing off on back then, they probably were not.
