The state of justice on Airstrip One

How can a judge deem that:

During the trial, Judge Sellers ruled that "none" of the defence’s three arguments would be allowed for the jury to consider.

How can that be allowed?

Surely everyone is entitled to offer their defence in a court of law.

At least the Jury acted with common sense and good grace
