I spend my day building/running scripts for PowerBI and emailed csv reports used operationally across the business. Some of these scripts can take 30 mins to an hour to run as our databases are compiled from gaffa tape and hope. There's no option to shift my scripts etc. to a central reporting server or anything either, so I essentially AM the reporting server. Not efficient. But not my choice.
Often, I'd have a bunch of scripts and BIs refreshing at the same time and it can be easy for this ancient machine they call a laptop to reach its limit and I sit there for an hour scrolling my phone. I have to keep pressing the space bar/moving my mouse to stop the laptop from going to sleep or Teams chucking me into Away so everyone thinks I'm, well, scrolling my phone.
When I'm in the office, I have to keep hunching over my laptop pretending I'm doing something or peeps get snarky and think I'm not doing anything productive.
There's some days where I'm constantly working on refreshing of large reports for adhoc "urgent" requirements, and I might not do much more than click a mouse a couple of times and then hit space bar every 5 mins.
I'd prefer to be judged on whether I do my job than how many times I touch my keyboard. Because, sometimes, my job is just that simple. But I constantly build automation and scripts so it can be.
I might be paranoid. But that doesn't mean they aren't out to get me...
