My impression is that he has not changed. He is convinced the only way forward is Mars and that Earth is doomed.

I think many mistook his interest in electric cars as an environmental concern but I think he just ran with that to get CA funding. Now that is dried up and CA wants him to pay taxes he has gone all Douglas Adams and to CA and said "so long and thanks for all the fish".

Here's what I see:

There is no fossil fule on Mars so you need solar, batteries, electric vehicles. You need boring devices to dig habitats and satelite communication. You need rockets to get there.

Everything aligns with a Mars vision. Twitter might be a distraction, but recall he was forced to buy it after offering 420 a share while high off his ass.

In the end, his Galt's Gulch in space will need a global communications system so I'm sure he will fit Twitter into his plans.
