Zero-K simplified the economy (metal cost = energy cost) but added a whole lot of mechanics like overdrive grids and made every unit unique. There is a lot more unit variety with mind-control, jumpjets, shields, unit-throwers, self-replicators, teleports, terraforming, etc.
