They aren't just taking "the chinese word for it". Many folks love it and know it is impressive because its largely open source and can be put on a Raspberry pi.

Thus, unlike _open_ ai (lol) people can actually already see its impressive even if all claims can't yet be verified. I didn't see anyone say something like this for the LLAMA release which also hurt OpenAIs standing. My theory is this is another case of "its chinese so must be bad and cannot be trusted" even though its open source and thus doesn't have to be chinese at all.
