I don't see any evidence that gay people are particularly threatened in the US right now. In many ways we are better represented than ever, with prominent gay people in powerful positions in tech (as in billionaire CEOs of companies with household names). They certainly wouldn't abide such threats.
The original purpose of gay liberation was to make us equal, not special or protected or even particularly recognized. Just equal to everyone else. It's not a solved problem but we are closer than ever. Many people can't even name the gay CEOs I'm talking about, which is exactly the point. They're equal to all the others.
