Beyond the NYT, there have been many publicized incidents where companies have burned through their entire year’s AI budget in just the first few months of this year, or companies suddenly getting sticker shock when the rates jumped - I saw a screenshot of one dev’s billing dashboard where it went from just a few hundred in one month to over thirty thousand in the next, all while using about the same number of tokens.

Not saying there isn’t some small schadenfreude there, but hallucinations increase with every AI generation, there are very real and negative cognitive side effects from using AI to any material amount, and AI build-out (with no small amount of digital surveillance infra hiding under the trench coat) is making it hellishly expensive to get any serious computing power these days, with no relief in sight for the next half a decade.
