Food Map - https://stlouing.com/food - a map of local restaurants and cafes I've found with ratings and some thoughts and comments on each one.
Neighborhood Map - https://stlouing.com/neighborhoods - a map of all the neighborhoods, which brings in any food spots or articles that reference each neighborhood, annual events, a few useful links like Niche, Wikipedia, and whatever I personally discover about those neighborhoods.
And then I have it divided into Topics (https://stlouing.com/topics) for evergreen articles that I'll keep modifying as I learn more, and Lists like Best of St. Louis Food (https://stlouing.com/best) which aggregates all my favorite food spots.
The maps are all locally hosted and scoped to the region, so I'm not using any Google Maps API, and the site is hosted on GitHub pages and open source.
I had a lot of fun building this, and I feel like it could also be useful for anyone else who wants for fork it for another city.
I really wanted to lean into the "old internet" ethos - just making a website about a personal hobby/interest. The modern internet is all videos and loud, flashy content. I don't know if there's any place left for sites like this, but I'm enjoying it.
The site relies on Astro, GitHub, Leaflet/Protomaps/OpenStreetMap, Lucide, Formspree, and Supabase.
