Tell HN: 1Password 7 final retirement notice

I can't find any web accessible news release or the like on 1Password.com, articles, or even blogs discussing this yet, but our teams have stuck with 1P7 and I just received an email indicating that the final EOL for that is coming up. Thought a few others might be interested, seems to be a staggered message rollout (I haven't gotten the email yet on all my admin accounts). It has been quite a journey, looking back through my emails I first discovered and bought it back in late 2007 around build 2.5.7. Hard to believe it's been almost 20 years, even early on it was a real upgrade over manually doing stuff via Keychain, and AgileBits had a really great vibe. Even the emails that were certainly pretty marketing feel a bit nostalgic, and the old release notes, stuff moved quick. They used to just randomly turn up sometimes in various Mac forums directly to answer questions and talk ideas. Was honestly impressive when a dev showed up in the Mac Ach on Ars and corrected and PR person and acknowledged that yes they needed (and had in progress) to update their storage format to encrypt more metadata details.

Anyway, onward to their brave new world I guess, or in my case motivation to finally get serious about Vaultwarden. But I appreciate what they did on the side of light first.

Notification:

>Upgrade your users to 1Password 8

>Hi [xoa],

>We’re retiring 1Password 7. Starting in early 2027, it will no longer sync changes for 1Password membership accounts.

>Our records show that some people in your organization are still using 1Password 7. We’re reaching out to help you move them to 1Password 8.*

>Since launching in 2021, 1Password 8 helps more than 200,000 business customers secure and manage passwords, passkeys, secrets, and more. It provides the experience your team already knows and trusts, with stronger and more consistent protection across every device.

>Once this change takes effect, users will still be able to open 1Password 7 and view their existing data. However, changes made in 1Password 7 will no longer sync to their other devices.

On the same boat stuck with 1p7 + dropbox.

I've been actively looking for alternatives because 1) the 1p7's mv2 extension no longer works after chrome dropped all mv2 hacks since 152; 2) I want to get rid of dropbox

The hard part is there really is no good alternatives out there. Looks like you either have bad UI/UX or you have to store data on the password manager's own cloud service.

Having tried bit/vault-warden myself, the UX is getting intolerable especially when it comes to searching, filtering, custom fields and attachments. May have to take the lesser of the two evils and go with 1p8's cloud service.

I'm still on 1P7 (personal, not team) and still using Dropbox for sync. Hope it never breaks. Never wanted to research the new 1P8 server sync model. Of course I saw that nasty Dropbox unverified IdP account takeover disclosure, so maybe it's no better than whatever 1P is doing on the server.

In our case we use both Dropbox and also have a few teams using the 1P.com sync in addition. So we value both, plus just plain still don't like the 1P8 software itself.

Of course with the original Dropbox based sync, a concern is that Dropbox itself isn't set in amber, at some point it might get rug pulled and sadly 1P never introduced WebDAV or some other self-hosted option before subscription/VC fever set in. And I suppose that macOS continues to move along too. 1P7 on the latest and final version is Apple Silicon native and through a lot of major transitions doing nothing exciting, so it might well keep running for a long time. But the browser extensions will probably stop working at some point which is going to be another big line for a lot of people, and legitimately because it's a not insignificant bit of security.

Anyway, I mean, not like one couldn't keep running it a long time via various layers, but I figure probably time to at least survey the landscape on moving on :(
