Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (October 2026) Please lead with either SEEKING WORK or SEEKING FREELANCER, your location, and whether remote work is a possibility. Please only post if you are looking to hire a freelancer or work as one. Small (2-5 person) agencies are fine, but recruiters, job boards, and so on, are off topic here. |
Hey, I'm Tim, a full stack developer with 13 years of experience building web, mobile and AI apps. I've spent the past year as founding engineer for an AI data startup, designing and building a multi-agent system. I took this project from nothing to delivering for a 7-figure enterprise contract in a matter of months, including: robust chat streaming; a custom data lake with versioned metadata; curation pipelines capable of downloading any public data on the internet; agent workflows that clean data, create metadata and document common query patterns and pitfalls; agents that write code and commit it to source control; an artifact system for on-the-fly interactive charts, maps and dashboard with live data.
As a longtime freelancer, I've taken many projects from conception to production and I can spot potential problems in UX and architecture long before they bite. I take pride in attention to detail and craft, from pleasing frontend interactions to well-organized backends that are ready to scale. I'm a former journalist and staff writer at the Washington Post, so I've got strong communication skills and can write clear documentation. Please take a look at my portfolio to have a look at what I've built: https://hotttest.hot.page
I'm originally from Connecticut and currently living between New Haven, Conn and Mexico City. I am looking for remote work right now, but happy to travel for the right gig. If you're interested in building something together, please send me a note at twfarnam@gmail.com
Tired of vibecoders? Everything in your environment constantly broken? Try real, organic, human-made code today!
I advocate for, and practice, writing maintainable and well tested code. I prefer to keep the dependency list as small as possible, and every line is written by hand. Thought and care are put into the how and the why behind decisions.
Examples of things I'm happy to help with:
- cleaning up existing code
- writing new code/features
- fixing your CI/CD pipeline
- advising on onboarding/DevEx
- advising on project management
- answering hard questions like "we mandated 100% test coverage, why do we still have bugs?"
Examples of things I will not do:
- vibe code anything
- use "AI" to respond to your emails/questions/etc
- use "AI" to "assist" development(AKA generate a lot of bad code really fast)
- build some horrible "AI driven/enabled/whatever" privacy nightmare for you to inflict on your customers

I run a one-man technology studio. I build digital tools with zero frills.
I do both design and engineering. Design is grounded in technology, and technology serves the design. I don't rely on heavy frameworks, endless third-party dependencies, or LLM-generated code. I believe having a landfill of features destroys a product. I want my software lightweight, fast, and built to last.
Recent work:
* Breadboard: A modern HyperCard for the web. While everyone rushes toward LLM app generators, I built a visual canvas where users define behavior using natural language programming cards, exporting to a fully working web app.
* Qualifier: A BIM quality assurance tool. I took a slow, expensive microservices architecture and rebuilt it as a fast, reliable monolithic architecture. I implemented a precise, performant rule-checking engine, and paired it with an intuitive user interface. Users can write tests and view results in real-time, directly on the 3D model.
* AL0: A minimalist smartphone environment for Android. I removed all digital noise and built a utilitarian, text-first UI to implement only the essential features of a phone.
I partner with focused entrepreneurs who know exactly what they want to build, with zero frills.

I'm a senior technical specialist for startups. I offer assessment, planning, strategy, architecture, design, build, deploy and management services.
I have 25+ years of hands-on experience across all IT roles. I tune my deliverables to exactly what the client needs. I don't do one-size-fits-all solutions. I know how to use AI intelligently, when it works and when it doesn't. I don't do vibe coding.
Some of the things I've done recently:
- Stealth startup: Agentic build of a v1 streaming service: production quality design, billing/analytics/reporting engines, PWA, catalog import, play tracking
- Publishing startup: Built a pipeline for automated translation, validation and generation of .indd documents for ebooks
- Fintech startup: Greenfield DevOps implementation (cloud architecture, IaC, CI/CD) in a regulated environment
- Social media startup: ML pipeline for programmatic detection of social and music trends based on media plays
- Ecommerce startup: Designed an ML-powered analysis system to correlate search results and purchase behaviour

I am a backend expert, having built and maintained mission critical, low latency and highly available systems for many companies over the last 10 years, in addition to over 20 total years of software development experience. I learn new things extremely quickly. AWS preferred but not required (I hold a variety of certs, available here: https://www.credly.com/users/jon-north.ad78f0c8)
Concrete examples:
* built the primary streaming data architecture for realtime game player tracking information (all games, 50ms SLA) and game stats for one of the top 3 US sports leagues using Redpanda/Kafka on Azure+Terraform, and implemented its developer portal using Gravitee to provide first class streaming API support and monetization. Also built, deployed and maintained their ask-a-question-get-a-true-answer AI bot to expose 20+ years of stats to natural language fan questions! (this was the third of currently four times I’ve built similar architectures for different companies)
* Implemented a vector DB for one of the leading AI image hallucination platforms (millions of users) to provide an image similarity service.
* replatformed dozens of complex quant jobs to AWS Lambda for a startup hedge fund (~$1B AUM), vastly improving QoS and maintenance cost. Line 1 to platform-in-prod time 3 months, including refactoring for fit. This was mission critical cannot-fail stuff and required extensive proof of correctness.
* built a framework to collapse dozens of singleton ETL programs into one config-driven, simple C# application performing the same functionality at ~80% reduction in maintenance cost year over year.
You will like working with me because I:
* hold your goals as my priorities
* communicate verbosely yet synthesize well
* my rates are reasonable in exchange for the value I deliver
* I guarantee I will get the job done
Technologies: Python, C/C#/C++, SQL, NoSQL, Go, Golang, Docker, Git, Linux/Windows, Bash, Kafka, Redpanda, PySpark, Spark, AWS, Azure, GCP, Terraform, Kubernetes, Redis, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, SAP HANA, LDAP, Active Directory, OAuth2 AI: However you roll is fine. Agentic, just-generative, or write by hand. I’m fine with any of it. The important thing is crushing your goals.

17+ years of experience, startups, CTO for mid-sized company, consultant for fortune 500s.
I do DevOps and do systems/hypervisor level work in Rust.
I have recently helped several startups save dramatically on their AWS invoices, while at the same time improving performance, and making it easier to manage. I'm experimenting to see if doing so as a service "has legs".
What you get (for free):
An expert consultation and written plan (written by me, not AI slop) that details two options:
1. How to save money, improve operations, security etc on your current platform.
2. What it would look like if you moved to a private, hardware assisted cloud that I manage for you.
I'm hoping you will take the second option. If it doesn't save you at least 25% and make operations better, then don't bother. If you choose it, you only pay for the monthly hosting. I will migrate your services from your current cloud provider, help you setup reliable DevOps processes, manage the infra, etc.
But if you don't pick the second option, you still get the free consultation and write up. Sometimes you can pay me to implement the recommendations, but mostly I'm too busy supporting the second option.
Let me know: jordan@jordanschatz.com
