I renamed my wife’s Hotmail account over a week ago to Outlook, and in the process lost her 10+ years’ worth of email messages. Having had a look at MS’s support forum, it seems that it’s not an isolated case:

I raised a call on the 9th of June, and Microsoft’s technical have not been very responsive in trying to rectify the issue. Is there anyone from Redmond that has any insight on this? The misses isn't very happy and I would really like to sort this out sooner rather than later.
