Ask HN: Is it true that I can't disable my keyless entry? So two days ago at least 5 cars on my street were broken into (the police report says they think the thieves were using a wireless entry hack) and I wrote an article about my experience (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7132783). Since then I have called my local Honda dealer and they said that they could not disable my keyless entry and this was an issue that only corporate could deal with (with skepticism that it even happened) and then the corporate headquarters told me that local dealerships were the responsible party and that if they said nothing could be done- then the only thing I could do would be to "work with local law enforcement to protect against theft" The customer service rep also said that this was the first time they had heard of this type of attack, and that they had no solution they could offer me to make it so someone could unlock my car at the push of a button. At this point I just want to shut off my keyless entry but both Honda and Toyota (my neighbor also called to follow up) both said you can't turn of keyless entry. If that is true, what should I do (besides not keep valuables in the car- I don't want my airbag stolen or even some person to be able to open my car unabated)? |
