I've had this happen more times than I care to count (with a wide variety of companies) unfortunately, and it's usually because, surprise, busy company is busy and things fall through the cracks. There are also possible company policies in play (Google, for example, refused to give me more feedback after they passed on me circa 2007-08) and laws that, while they weren't violating them most likely, could come back to bite them if they were to say the wrong thing. Just like when you're fired, it's usually best for a company to keep their mouth shut and let you be upset about the lack of feedback than risk any other issues that could arise.
As much as I don't want to be "that guy" that doesn't seem to care about your feelings, I'm going to say it: get over it and move on. If they're not interested, find someone who is. You'll be much happier there I promise.
(Side note: I work at FireEye/Mandiant; we're probably looking for someone with your skillset, so why not apply there? ;))
In a work-for-hire state no reason needs to be given for a termination. In fact, it's better that you don't. You open up all kinds of avenues for lawsuits if you do. I can certainly see the same being said for the intake process.
OP got a very polite thanks-but-no-thanks and a handshake. I'm guessing he got to keep the free books too. That's lightyears more than most other shops would ever do. I don't see a problem here.
