Why are train drivers necessary in an increasingly automated world?

Trains run on fixed tracks, at fixed speeds, have fixed stops and have right of way (mostly because they are very difficult to stop quickly).

If there is an obstruction on the tracks, even if a human driver is in charge, a train is nearly impossible to stop.

So what are the challenges that prevent the cockpit of a train being replaced by a n automated driver?","time":1504494606,"title":"Ask HN: Why aren't trains fully automated?","type":"story"}],[14314698,{"by":"djaychela","descendants":6,"id":14314698,"kids":[14314916,14321066,14317188,14322279],"score":4,"text":"$19","time":1494492764,"title":"Ask HN: Are there 'standard' projects to complete as a rite of passage?","type":"story"}],[14025549,{"by":"pygix","descendants":4,"id":14025549,"kids":[14026291,14029859,14026845],"score":5,"time":1491243702,"title":"Ask HN: Why not use Python?","type":"story"}]]
